what are spam stories?

Here at Spam Stories we don’t like to see great art wasted. That’s why we’ve dedicated ourselves to making literary works out of those cunning text samples spammers use to validate their messages. It can be a poem, a story, a dramatic scene, even a picture – as long as it’s inspired by the last spam text to squirm its way into our junk folder.

So how is it done?

Lots of spam-related sites on the web simply post examples of spam texts. While this is fun and very amusing in its own right, here at Spam Stories we do things a little differently. The name of the game here is to make a junk text into something bigger and better, using the original for inspiration.

Some spam texts are easier to work with than others. Certain passages seem to lend themselves well to manipulation. A fantastic email subject or sender name can set the whole process going, and sometimes the characters just jump out and beg to be explored.

We like to stick as closely as possible to the original text, but obviously there have to be additions and elaborations. Below is an example of a spam text followed by the story that inspired it, with the original (or only slighly manipulated) words and sentences highlighted in the story.

So this:

 becomes this:

The Problem Child

There is something very precise about him,” Errol remarked. “He has a good head–piece.”

But he does nothing!” Breunig retorted. “And has a bad and cruel disposition. When he was a little child, he would delight in catching flies and tearing off their wings, so as to make creeping things of them.”

“No!” Errol protested.

When he was older,” Breunig went on. “He would-”

Errol interrupted, “And on that very account, they thought he must be something.”

“He would take cockchafers and beetles, and stick pins through them!” Breunig went on, pushing a green leaf towards Errol emphatically.

“Oh really?”

“Really. He would go to church with the old people and sit there silently, staring vacantly.”

“Well, I’m not able to tell you what the twelve passengers have brought for him.” Errol said.

Tell that to the two birds he killed.” Breunig shrugged.

  2. Turning SPAM into nectar… Thanks for a wonderful concept. You’ve made my day! I’m giving you a link on my Writing page. (It’s not very prominent, but I am working to better organize my links.)

  3. What a great site! Isn’t it amazing the kind of weird random goodness that sometimes popups in the midst of endless Viagra ads. I do something similar over at http://spamfortunes.cpilgrim.com
